JUAN MARTIN, who played at Queen Elizabeth
Hall on 12 September and who will be playing at the Westminster Theatre Arts
Centre on Sunday 15 October (see Diary), learnt his Flamenco in the land of
its origin, the province of Andalucía, Southern Spain. Still in his
twenties, he is regarded as one of the world's leading exponents of
Flamenco.
He was greatly honoured in being
asked to give a Flamenco recital in commemoration of Picasso's 90th birthday
at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Flamenco Duo Delphine y Domingo certainly get around the world. The
well-known flamenco dancer and guitarist have been performing in Lusaka,
Zambia. In January 1973 they are going to Granada. They have appeared in
Holland, Hong Kong, Barbados, Nigeria, The Canary Islands, Malta and
Gibraltar. At present they are appearing at the Excelsior Hotel, London
Airport, and at Christmas they will be performing at the Metropole Hotel,
Brighton. If you can't afford posh hotel prices, you might catch them on TV
- they've already been on BBC Wales, Midland and Southern, to say nothing of
many radio programmes.

Juan Martín
One of the remarkable things about
solo flamenco guitar recitals is that they are so often exccllent. Yet
surely no other solo instrumentalist has such a difficult task. Not only
must the solo flamenco player display a formidable technique - exposed and
vulnerable without the clatter of castanets and heels - but he must also
present the various improvisatory aspects inherent in the form in a coherent
way.
In short, he has to be his own
composer in addition to everything else. That does not mean he can play what
he likes. Everything must conform in style, content and spirit to the rules
evolved during the past two hundred years. In spite of this, the framework
is far from rigid, and allows plenty of scope for originality and invention.
Thus Flamenco is
constantly on the move, never standing still long enough to be
comprehensively defined, measured, analysed, classified and catalogued by
what I like to call the antique dealers of music. It remains triumphantly
alive.
Juan Martín is a flamenco guitarist
in the great tradition. His technique is prodigious, without the smallest
hint of exhibitionism, yet it is always put to good musical use. He is not
perhaps always successful in everything he does. There was an odd holding
back, it seemed, in one or two of the slower pieces such as the Tarantas and
the Serranas, both of which are traditionally vehicles for the deepest
emotions. And I felt that the Rondenas didn't quite hang together as it
should have done.
These are small
criticisms in a generally excellent and very substantial evening of music.
The two Rumbas and the Cuban Guajiras, comparative newcomers to Flamenco
(evidence of the form's ability to move with the times), were particularly
good. Paradoxically, the lighter and faster pieces generally held more inner
tension on this occasion. Technical difficulty seems to bring out the best
in Juan Martín; his two Bulerías carne off superbly, a magnificent thumb
giving rare prominence to the lean and hungry rhythm that lurks inside these
outwardly joyous pieces.
I must compliment
Juan Martín on the wealth of information contained in his programme notes.
We were even told that his guitar was made by the nephews of Domingo Esteso.
Other soloists please note! Guitarists in general do not regard information
of this kind as superfluous. CC

Rogelio de Malaga described in
BMG Magazine August 1974
Rogelio de Malaga (Singer) was
born in Malaga, Andalucía, and is perhaps the best flamenco singer resident
in England. He came here some 15 years ago, already well known, to begin an
immediate engagement at The Acapulco, Hanway Street (famous for its Flamenco
Restaurant Bar). With his extensive knowledge of the flamenco repertoire,
Rogelio, from the first, delighted the packed audience; each night the
atmosphere was charged with excitement, and the word quickly spread.
Accompanied by the prominent guitarists Antonio Navarro and Enrique Bejerano,
Rogelio became the idol of flamenco lovers in London and all over England,
and remained at the Acapulco with continued success. When the Acapulco
ceased to be a Spanish Restaurant, Rogelio formed a flamenco group of his
own and began an association with the Casa Pepe Restaurant, Fulham Road,
where he appeared for many years.
In addition to long-standing
engagements at the restaurants I have mentioned, Rogelio made extensive
tours of the best theatres in the major cities of England and Europe, before
adding T.V., radio and films to his wide experience of presenting the
flamenco art.
The demand for Rogelio's services as a flamenco singer
became evident immediately; for singers of his great calibre are always
called for by the best guitarists and dancers, and the demand increased to
immense proportions. Rogelio has always kept abreast of the times by adding
every new song to appear in the flamenco repertoire, despite his absence
from Spain for so many years.
Aficionados can hear Rogelio on Friday
and Saturday nights at the famous Spanish restaurant, El Sombrero,
in Denham, where he is accompanied by the young guitar genius, Tito and the
vivacious dancer Teresa de Sacromonte. Rogelio, Tito and Teresa form one of
the best flamenco trios in the London area, where we hope they will
entertain us for many years to come.

New home for the Bravery
Friends of flamenco
player Leslie Bravery, whose sudden disappearance from his usual haunts
caused the telephones to ring, will be glad to know that Leslie is alive and
well . . . in New Zealand! The offer of the tour carne without warning and
left the Bravery household 2¾ minutes to confer and decide that it was OK
for Leslie to make the trip.
Leslie is very busy
there. He says there's a tremendous amount of interest in the guitar, and
that in addition to his commitments as a solo player he's also the regular
guitarist with a flamenco group, 'El Niño León and Company'.
He is also booked for a
lot of teaching, and expects to stay for at least 6 months. Mrs Bravery has
been seen at least 12 times gazing into the window of the Emigration
Department at New Zealand House.
