Upcoming Calendar of Events in Southend
Classes start again on 10th September 2014 We are based in Leigh on-Sea. Our teacher Inma La Fiera will cover the basics of flamenco dance techniques and the choreography for complete dances. Inma is currently teaching Sevillanas, Farruca, Rumba and Bulerias. She will teach more dances as the class develops.
Find us at the Roydon Academy, Unit 13/15 Leighcliff Building, Maple Avenue, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9 1PR
When you arrive at the building you will see a small car park with some iron gates at the entrance. At the far end of the car park there is a metal staircase going up the outside of the building. Go up to the first floor to the door into the studio.
Roydon Studio from Maple Avenue Stairway to the studio With live guitar accompaniment
Time : 8:00 to 9:30 pm
Price: £5 per session. What is important is to have suitable shoes, and a minimum is those with a Cuban heel, such as "court shoes". To learn and perform the footwork properly the heel gives you the right posture, and makes it easier to alternate between toe and heel sounds. Real flamenco shoes have nails in the toes and heels to make a sharper percussive sound, and these shoes can be bought in London, or from shops in Spain over the Internet, but you will not need those initially.
We welcome any new members who want to
learn to dance flamenco and invite all aficionados (singers, dancers and
guitarists) to join us in promoting this fantastically exciting art form

October 2010
Sadly the Spanish restaurant La Tasca, in the centre of Southend, closed at the end of October 2010. Previously this venue has offered a focus for things Spanish in the area, and was a place where live flamenco music and dance has been performed over its short lifetime. Let us hope that more places like this will open in the future.

27 June 2010 The Leigh-on-Sea Folk Festival is an annual event, and in recent years Flamenco Ole have given the flamenco performances during the Festival. In 2010 it was no different, and this Chelmsford group gave a good account of itself while performing in the difficult environment of the street. Still photographs cannot capture the excitement of what flamenco dancing is like in the flesh. Some video would be the best medium to capture the way this event looks like in reality. Perhaps somebody will capture some video of these girls in the future?
When those shawls are moving, these girls are grooving
Grace and elegance is what Flamenco Ole is best at.
