Brian Myatt on BMG magazine's front cover

Brian Myatt - Resident guitarist at the Troubadour Flamenco Club

'Resident guitarist at the Troubadour Flamenco Club (which has been a meeting place for those interested in flamenco for several years), Brian Myatt has the distinction of having been invited every year for the past five years to perform at the Seville Fair.

Mr. Myatt has been playing the guitar for a decade; flrst playing in the strict Tarrega method. At that time he had heard some flamenco but had no liking for it. After three years studying the guitar in the classical manner, he again heard some flamenco and found the strange Oriental sound fascinating. He searched for a teacher and was lucky enough to find a genuine enthusiast who taught him all he now knows.

Brian Myatt plays guitar solos but strongly prefers accompanying flamenco singers and dancers. He says for accompaniment the vital thing is to have a strong, firm sense of rhythm, or compás, as it is called in Spanish. He mentions there are some flamenco guitarists who would not be considered good players by classical guitarists but because they have such good compás, they are always sought after by flamenco dancers and singers.'

May: from Peter Sensier's BMG article "Guitar Topics"

'... after a concert at Greenwich, we looked up another old friend, Gerald Howson, whose name will ring a bell with most serious flamenco enthusiasts.
In 1955 Gerald went to Spain - and in particular to Andalucía - to study flamenco at its source. His interesting, hilarious, and sometimes hair-raising experiences formed the basis of his book "The Flamencos of Cádiz Bay" which was published by Hutchinsons of London in 1965.

Being out of England when it was published, I had not read the book. Now I have. And how glad I am that I have.

"The Flamencos of Cádiz Bay" is, in my humble opinion, the best book yet written about flamenco. It is a completely unromantic book, but it is also a deeply, lovingly and delicatey observed book. Having read it, one begins to appreciate what the "dark art" of flamenco is all about.

No honest flamenco enthusiast can afford to be without this book. Any guitarist will find it enthralling; and I cannot imagine any folk enthusiast who would not find it utterly fascinating and very rewarding.

Circumstances have kept Gerald Howson away from actual guitar playing for some time, but I am delighted to learn that he will now have more time to devote to his beautiful 1924 Santos Hernández guitar, and to the mysteries of flamenco of which he has such an intímate and practical knowledge.
